Why Ashburn?

Ashburn, live since 2024, is in IAD1 on the Loudoun campus — the stretch of Virginia that contains more internet than most countries, built on farmland that was cheap until the cables arrived. We joined Equinix Ashburn with Arelion, Cogent and Lumen, and the first test instance answered New York at 6 ms, from a building whose neighbours' names sit on every status page your customers have ever read.

The site runs 0.94 Tbit/s of edge capacity — second in the Americas only to New York — at a 1 ms local median, with 13 ms to Chicago, 21 to Dallas and 68 to London. Ashburn is data-centre alley itself: if you want the same fibre loops as the clouds without renting from them, this is the rack, at the price of a Nano.

Questions about Ashburn

The two answers people actually ask about this site, then the five we give everywhere.

This site

Ashburn or New York for the US East Coast?
Six milliseconds, and then it comes down to fabric. Ashburn is where the clouds and the exchanges concentrated, so the peering is densest here — 13 ms to Chicago and 21 to Dallas. New York adds DE-CIX New York and the transatlantic anchor at 66 ms to London against Ashburn's 68. Both cost the same; pick the neighbourhood your traffic prefers.
Isn't Ashburn where the big clouds live — why rent there?
That is precisely why you should. The Loudoun campus's power and fibre were built for the world's largest workloads, and a Nano on the same loops rides that infrastructure for €1.90 a month. You do not get the clouds' control planes, but you also do not get their invoices; the neighbouring racks are a status-page feature, not a cost line.

Everywhere

Which region should I pick?
Measure, then read. Median RTT decides most cases: pick the site closest to the users you already have, then check the local law if that matters to your data. We do not charge a regional premium, so the decision is never financial.
Is the price the same in every location?
Yes. A Nano costs €1.90 per month in Frankfurt and in São Paulo. There is no regional pricing tier, no 'emerging market' discount and no 'premium location' markup to optimise around.
Can I move a server to another site later?
Take a snapshot, deploy the same image at the destination, restore, update the DNS. The console does not yet automate the migration end-to-end, but nothing about the price changes if you redeploy somewhere else.
Is DDoS protection included?
Standard volumetric filtering is always on and always free at every site. If you need application-layer scrubbing with custom rules, the Advanced tier costs €3.90 per month per server.
What IP addresses do I get?
Every server ships with one dedicated IPv4 and a routed /64 of IPv6, both announced from the site you chose. Additional IPv4s are €1.20 per month each, up to eight per server.

Payments from United States

Orders from United States are handled exactly like every other order: checkout in euros, payment in Bitcoin, Monero or any of twenty-four assets, and the server provisions on the first network confirmation. No card, no bank, no name that has to match one.
